Parts of the brain Flashcards
(16 cards)
Cerebrum
largest part of the brain.
composed of right and left hemispheres.
interprets touch, vision and hearing, emotions, learning and fine control of movement.
Cerebellum
Located under the cerebrum.
Coordinate muscle movements.
Maintain posture and balance.
Brainstem
autonomic functions such as breathing, heart rate, body temperature, wake and sleep cycles, sneezing, coughing, vomiting and swallowing.
lateral
towards the side
medial
towards the middle
telencephalon
two symmetrical hemispheres
limbic system
basal ganglia
cerebral cortex
has gray matter
consists mostly of glia and the cell bodies, dendrites and interconnecting axons and neurons.
cerebral cortex regions
primary visual cortex
primary auditory cortex
primary somatosensory cortex
primary motor cortex
basal ganglia
caudate nucleus
putamen
globus pallidus
control of movement
the limbic system
hippocampus
amygdala
fornix
mammillary bodies
center of our emotions, learning, and memory. Included in this system are the cingulate gyri, hypothalamus, amygdala (emotional reactions) and hippocampus (memory).
frontal lobe
judgement, planning, problem solving
intelligence, concentration and self awareness
Broca’s area
temporal lobe
understanding language (Wernicke’s area)
parietal lobe
touch, pain and temperature
spatial and visual perception
occipital lobe
vision
hypothalamus
third ventricle
control of autonomic system
controls behaviours such as hunger and thirst
thalamus
pain sensation, alertness, attention and memory
