Passive Network Monitoring Techniques Flashcards
What are passive network monitoring techniques?
Methods that observe network traffic without interfering with the flow of data.
What is a network tap?
A hardware device that passively copies traffic from a network link for monitoring or analysis.
What is port mirroring?
A switch feature that duplicates traffic from one or more ports to another port for monitoring.
What is a trunk port?
Used to carry multiple VLANs between switches — not a monitoring method.
What is an SNMP trap?
A type of alert sent from a device to a monitoring system — active notification, not passive monitoring.
What is a registered port?
Ports ranging from 1024–49151 assigned by IANA for specific services — unrelated to monitoring.
