Past Paper Flashcards
(28 cards)
Uses of Magill Forceps
- direct ET tube through glottis
- direct nasogastric tube into oesophagus
- placement of throat packs
- remove foreign objects
Use of ETT
- maintain patient airway
- prevent aspriation
- provide effective positive pressure ventilation
- clear secretion by suctioning
Uses of nasotracheal intubation
- long-term intubation
- surgery in oral cavity
(give ephedrine 0.5% to vasoconstrict blood vessels)
When to use a tracheostomy tube
- prolonged ventilation in ICU
- suctioning is easier
- emergency rescue airway
- head and neck deformity
Uses of OPA
- prevent tongue from obstructing airway
- prevent biting of ETT when awakening
Advantages of LMA
- easy insertion
- less stimulating that ETT
- lower incidence of sore throat
- can ventilate with pressure to prevent stomach inflation
- relieves anaesthetists hands
Disadvantages of LMA
- doesn’t prevent aspiration
- ventilation not always possible
- epiglottis can occlude airway
Where can you insert a CVP?
- Jugular vein
- subclavian vein
- basilic vein
Route of pulmonary artery floatation catheter
- SVC
- RA
- RV
- PA
Uses of pulmonary artery floatation catheter
- measure CO
- pulmonary artery pressure
- pulmonary capillary wedge pressure
- temperature
- injection of fluids
Fancy name for pulmonary artery floatation catheter
Swan-Ganz catheter
Enfluorane colour
Orange
Halothane colour
Red
How does a pulse oximeter work?
The rate of transmission of infrared is inversely proportional to the Hb saturation
Uses for Ayres T piece
in children <20kg or 6 yrs
Fresh gas flow is 2-3 minute volume
An A-line consists of:
- arterial line connected by heparinized saline dilled non-compressible tubing to
- pressure transduced
- bedside monitor
- pressurized saline for flushing
Things in an epidural kit
- loss of resistance syringe
- Tuohy needle (16/18G)
- bacterial filter
Schimel Busch Mask
- Would sit on patient’s face over a gamgee
- chloroform dripped onto cotton for patient to inhale
Definition of neuroleptic anaesthesia
Combo of neuroleptic tranquilizer (haloperidol) and potent narcotic drug (morphine)
When is neuroleptic anaesthesia used?
- facial and breast surgery
Diathermy
Living tissue is cut by means of high frequency alternating electrical current
Purpose of Yankauer suction
To clear airway and remove foreign bodyies
Where is a miller blade inserted?
Into the oropharynx past the epiglottis
Where is a macintosh blade inserted?
Into the vallecula
