Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Flashcards

genetic and biochemical mechanisms employed by bacterial pathogens in pathogenesis (5 cards)

1
Q

Staphylococcus aureus – causes of disease

A
  • opportunistic bacteria
  • Disease is caused when it gains access to tissue through breaks in skin (physical barrier to infection)
  • Often infections are nosocomial e.g. during disease

Q

What is the importance of quorum sensing in S. aureus pathogenesis?

A

As the density of bacteria increases, the AIP concentration increased in the environment -> these signals are recognised by surrounding bacteria (process of quorum sensing) -> until reaching threshold activation leads to gene switching into virulent form.
Allows for coordination of toxin production.
