Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Flashcards
genetic and biochemical mechanisms employed by bacterial pathogens in pathogenesis (5 cards)
1
Q
Staphylococcus aureus – causes of disease
A
- opportunistic bacteria
- Disease is caused when it gains access to tissue through breaks in skin (physical barrier to infection)
- Often infections are nosocomial e.g. during disease
2
Q
What is meant by a nosocomial infection?
A
Disease acquired during admission in hospital
3
Q
How many serotypes does S.pneumoniae have
A
92
4
Q
How many S.P. serotypes can jump from person to person
A
20
5
Q
What is the importance of quorum sensing in S. aureus pathogenesis?
A
As the density of bacteria increases, the AIP concentration increased in the environment -> these signals are recognised by surrounding bacteria (process of quorum sensing) -> until reaching threshold activation leads to gene switching into virulent form.
Allows for coordination of toxin production.
