Pathology Terms Flashcards
(23 cards)
Cystic
large open spaces filled with fluid. Mucinous tumours are filled with mucus and serous tumours are filled with a thin, watery fluid that resembles serum. These types of tumours are most commonly found in the ovaries.
Verrucous
Wart-like growth. Frequently found in tumours of the gum.
Ulcerating
Open, exposed surface due to the death of overlying tissue. Often found in stomach, breast, colon and skin
Polypoid
Growths that projects outward from a base. Sessile polypoid tumours extend from a broad base and pedunculated polypoid tumours extend from a stem or stalk. Benign and malignant tumours of the colon may grow as polyps.
Necrotic
Containing dead tissue. Occurs when the tumour outgrows its blood supply and undergoes necrosis.
Medullary
Large, soft and fleshy tumours. Thyroid and breast tumours may be medullary.
Inflammatory
Tumours are red, swollen and hot. Due to lymphatic drainage of the skin e.g breast cancer.
Fungating
Mushroom pattern of growth. Tumour cells pile on top of one another and project from tissue surface. Most common in the colon.
Alveolar
Tumour cell patterns form patterns resembling small, microscopic sacs. Commonly found in muscle, bone, fat and cartilage tumours
Carcinoma in situ
Localised tumour cells that have not invaded adjacent structures.
Diffuse
Spreading throughout the affected tissue
Dysplastic
Abnormal formation of the cells.
Epidermoid
Resemble squamous epithelial cells (thin, plate like) often occurring in the respiratory tract.
Follicular
Small, microscopic, gland-type sacs. Thyroid tumours are typical of this appearance.
Nodular
Multiple areas of tightly packed clusters of cells with lightly populated areas in between. Malignant lymphomas may display a nodular pattern of lymph node involvement.
Papillary
Small, finger like projections of cells. Bladder and thyroid tumours may have this appearance
Pleomorphic
Composed of a variety of types of cells.
Scirrhous
Densely packed tumours which contain dense bands of fibrous tissue. Common in breast and stomach tumours.
Undifferentiated
Lacking microscopic structures typical of normal mature cells.
Carcinomas
Solid tumours that are derived from epithelial tissue that lines the internal and external body surfaces. Approximately 90% of all malignancies are carcinomas.
Adenocarcinoma
Malignant tumours of epithelial tissue origins
Adenoma
Benign tumours of epithelial tissue origins
Sarcoma
5% of all malignant tumours derived from connective tissues in the body
