Pathways in the spinal cord and brainstem Flashcards
(21 cards)
what modality is the medium lemniscal pathway
light touch and vibrational sense
in the dorsal column pathway for the lower limb where does the 1st order neuron axon run and where is its synapse
runs in the gracile fasciculus at the back of the spinal cord, most medial fasciculus, and then synapses to the 2nd order at the Gracile nucleus
describe the path of the 2nd order neuron in the dorsal column pathway for lower limb
cell body gracile nucleus, crosses over going into the medial lemniscus through the medulla, runs in this space until the VPL of the internal capsule
what level are the gracile and cuneate nuclei located
in the medulla more so the caudal part
describe the path of the 1st order neuron in the dorsal column pathway for the upper limb
DRG cell body
axon up the cuneate fasciculus
synapse in the cuneate nucleus
describe the path of the second order neuron in the dorsal column pathway
cell body is in the cuneate nucleus in the medulla, cross over in the medulla to other side, running up the medial lemniscus
describe the path of the spinothalamic first order neuron
DRG cell body, then coming in immediately and synapsing in the dorsal horn
describe the path of the second order neuron of the spinothalamic pathway
the synapse is in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, the axon then runs and crosses over via the ventral white commisure then runs up the lateral spinothalamic tract to the VPL
what is the modality of the spinothalamic pathway
pain and temperature sensation
whats the modality of the cuneocerebellar tract
upper limb proprioception
how many neurons in the cuneocerebellar tract and the posterior spinocerebellar tract
2
-“2?” in a rich texan voice
what levels of the spinal cord are the first order neurons for the cuneocerebellar tract
superior to C8
whats the nucleus which the first order neuron of the cuneocerebellar tract synapses in
the lateral cuneate nucleus in the medulla
what is the nucleus called where the first order neuron of the posterior spinocerebellar tract synapses
Clarkes Nucleus in the thoracic and lumbar spinal cord segments
where is clarkes nucleus
in the thoracic and lumbar spinal cord segments.
this is for the posterior spinocerebellar pathway remember
describe the path of the 1st order neuron in the cuneocerebellar tract
cell body is in the DRG superior to C8, axon then ascends ipsilaterally in cuneate fasciculus until synapsing in the lateral cuneate nucleus
describe the path of the 2nd order neuron in the cuneocerebellar tract
cell body in the lateral cuneate nucleus, axon of this then ascends up the cuneocerebellar tract and into the cerebellum via the ICP.
what can the lateral cuneate nucleus also be called
the accessory cuneate nucleus
whats the sensory modality of the posterior spinocerebellar tract
proprioception for the lower limb at or below the level of C8
describe the path for the first order neuron in the posterior spinocerebellar tract
cell body is in the DRG at or below the level of C8 to L2 ish, once axon comes into the spinal cord it immediately synapses onto 2nd order neuron in clarkes nucleus
whats the path of the 2nd order neuron in the posterior spinocerebellar tract
cell body in clarkes nucleus (in the spinal cord), it ascends in the posterior spinocerebellar tract and into the cerebellum via the ICP
