Emergency Driving Rule 302
- 3.3 Emergency Driving
- refers to the operation of an authorized police emergency vehicle, other than in pursuit, in excess of legal speed limit and/or contrary to traffic signs and signals, with lights and sirens activated
- 4.2 Allowable emergency driving tactics
- Passing a red stop signal or stop sign only after coming to a FULL STOP
- 5.5 Suspension of emergency driving
- If notified by dispatcher or supervisor that their emergency response is no longer needed, they shall cease emergency driving immediately
Pursuit Driving Rule 301
- Generally, pursuit driving is not justified and prohibited unless Occupants of the vehicle are known to be wanted for the commission of a violent or life-threatening felony or vehicle is being operated in an erratic/dangerous manner which poses a threat of harm to the public if it is not stopped.
- Motor Vehicle Pursuit = an officer, in an authorized police emergency vehicle, with lights and sirens activated, actively attempts to apprehend occupants of a suspect vehicle in which the driver increases speed to avoid apprehension
Priority Call 1:
Priority Call 2:
Call 1: Type of emergency that required immediately police response, threat to life.
Call 2: Also requires immediately response but there is no life in danger.
KEEP IN MIND:
An emergency response may be upgraded or downgraded by the responding officer, the Patrol Supervisor, or the Dispatcher.
That emergency driving and/or pursuit driving is STRICTLY PROHIBITED if the police vehicle is occupied by non-sworn/non-law enforcement personnel.

Responding to Radio Call:
- Use lights & sirens are established by the following factors:
1. Distance from the scene
2. Nature of the Incident
3. Traffic Conditions
4. Time of Duty
WHILE ENROUTE:
Before arrive, gather information
- Crime or Event
- People ( #, Description, Injuries, etc.)
- Officer Knowledge
- Weapons used
- Vehicle Description / Directions of Travel
- Crisis Rehearsal

Plan Ahead… Before, Consider
- Direction of Travel / Approach of Other Responding Units
- Suspect Entry / Escape Points
- Be Prepared to Stop People / Vehicle From Scene

Vehicle Approach: DAYTIME
- Turn off siren 6-8 blocks away from location
2. Turn off lights 2-4 blocks away from location
3. Coordinate approach with other responding units

- Prisoner’s and Booking
- Never enter the booking area with a firearm
- The booking officer shall book, photograph, and fingerprint all prisoners
- We are responsible for care and custody of prisoners
- Duty supervisor shall permit phone call within 1 hour
- Cells & prisoners will be visually inspected every 15 minutes and documented by Booking Officer
- Transporting females
- Transporting females (and juveniles) to district station for booking: officers shall notify operations via radio comms:
- Point of Departure
- Exact Time
- Odometer Reading
- Test Example: “B101F one female on board from 584 Blue Hill Ave. to the house, starting mileage 1011, 16:45 hrs.”
- The only time males/females are transported together is if they are arrested together for the complicity in the SAME offense (accomplices)
- Female prisoners are searched by female Boston POs (CODE 28)
- Female prisoners will not be confined in a cell block – will go to C6
- Juveniles under 14 can not be detained in lockup, 14-17 only for 6 hrs
