Q

The metabolic disorder at the core of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

characterized by insulin resistance (IR)?

A

A state where the body’s cells don’t respond effectively to the hormone insulin.

Insulin resistance is often considered a precursor to Type 2 diabetes (pre-diabetes).

As a compensatory mechanism for the reduced effectiveness of insulin, the body’s beta cells in the pancreas produce more insulin, leading to a condition called hyperinsulinemia.

Q

Insulin Resistance in PCOS vs. Normal Weight Gain

A

Weight gain naturally decreases insulin sensitivity for everyone, but for women with PCOS, this decline is much sharper.

In the UK, the average weight gain is about 0.5 kg per year, exacerbating insulin resistance more severely in PCOS compared to those without the syndrome.

Q

A

insulin resistance is familial:

  • No mutations in insulin receptor gene found in PCOS
  • Post-receptor binding defect somewhere in signalling pathway in granulosa cells?
