Q

How do you calculate the IV fluid rate in children.

A

Holiday-Segar Method:

1) First 10kg = 4mL/kg/hr
2) Second 10kg = 2mL/kg/hr
3) Each additional 1 kg = 1mL/kg/hr
4) For children weighing more than 20kg, add 40 to their weight in Kgs - that gives you the hourly IVF rate in mLs/hr for maintenance IV fluid rate
