(13 cards)
What is the zero point energy
zero point energy is the lowest possible energy that a quantum mechanical system may have.
How does translational energy arise
translation energy arises due to whole body movements in x,y and z directions
How does rotational energy arise
rotational energy arises due to whole body rotation around one or two independent axes
How does vibrational energy arise
vibrational energy arises due to oscillation of bond length or angle
Describe particle in a box
quantum particle has been placed in a box, the potential energy in the box is 0 but at the edge of the box at the boundary the potential goes to infinity.
Why does the potential energy go to infinity at the boundary
Is to confide the particle within the boundary of the box
For the particle in a box what doe the following terms in the equation mean
E, n, ħ, m, L
E - energy of the particle at quantum level n
n - quantum number/ energy level
ħ - reduced mass
m - mass of the particle
L - length of the box
What is n
n is the quantum number
How do we calculate the number of nodes
number of nodes = n-1
Describe the consequence of quantisation
the particle in a box never comes to rest and always have some kinetic energy n=1 level is the lowest energy we can energy
How do we calculate zero point energy
ZPE = h^2/8mL^2 = ħ^2pi^2/2mL^2
What are the uses for particles in a box
Particle in the box can calculate transitions that correspond to the absorption spectra in the polyenes
What is the equation for particles in a ring
Ej = j^2ħ^2/2mR^2
J - rotational level
ħ - h/2pi
m- mass
R - radius
