In the novella Crooks is the only black character present, and is disempowered and vulnerable. Unfortunately, the way he is treated is typical in 1930’s America due lots of racism in this era. He is segreated from the other workers on the ranch and is very lonely, but has no choice but to stay as it was very difficult for people, especially ones of colour, to find work due the Great Depression in 1929, and the mass unemployment that followed it.
