What is employee motivation?
The reasons why workers want to work hard, stay focused, and help the business succeed.
Why is motivation important in a business?
It increases productivity, reduces absenteeism, improves quality, and lowers staff turnover.
What is Taylor’s theory of motivation?
People are motivated by money. He introduced the piece-rate system and believed in training for efficiency.
What is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?
A theory that says people have 5 levels of needs: physical, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualisation.
What are Herzberg’s hygiene factors and motivators?
Hygiene factors prevent dissatisfaction (e.g. pay), motivators encourage better performance (e.g. recognition).
What is time-rate pay?
Pay based on hours worked.
What is piece-rate pay?
Pay based on the number of items made or tasks done.
What is commission?
Extra money earned for making sales.
Name two non-financial ways to motivate workers.
Job rotation, job enrichment, delegation, teamwork.
What is job enrichment?
Giving workers more meaningful and challenging tasks.
What is an organisational chart?
A diagram that shows the structure of a business, including who reports to whom.
What is span of control?
The number of workers a manager is directly in charge of.
What is delayering?
Removing levels of management to cut costs and improve communication.
What are the five functions of a manager?
Planning, Organising, Commanding, Coordinating, Controlling.
What is an autocratic leadership style?
The leader makes all the decisions without input from workers.
What is a democratic leadership style?
The leader includes employees in decision-making.
What is laissez-faire leadership?
Workers make their own decisions with little direction.
What is a trade union?
A group of workers that works to improve wages and working conditions.
