What triggered the beginning of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict?
On a visit to France, a Soviet academic named A. Aganbegyan asked they could separate Nagorno-Karabakh from Azerbaijan and unite it with Armenia
Where did the first anti-Azerbaijani rally take place and what happened??
Yerevan; Armenians shouted racist slogans such as ‘Armenia for Armenians’, ‘Clear Armenia from Azerbaijanis’ and destroyed the Yerevan Mosque.
What was the decision made by the Soviet Autonomous Region and when?
On 21 February 1988; To separate Nagorno-Karabakh from the Azerbaijan SSR and unite it with the Armenian SSR.
What was the purpose of the Sumqait events, and who was blamed?
Armenians used the event to spread negative propaganda against Azerbaijan and; Gregoryan, an Armenian, was responsible for killing 9 Armenians during the provocation, sharing it to mass media as if they organised the event.
What was the outcome for Azerbaijanis living in Armenia during the conflict?
4,000 were forced to leave Armenia, and many were killed or deported.
What was the role of Russian forces in the conflict?
Russian soldiers helped Armenians to clear Azerbaijanis from the last settlements like Nuvedi.
What was the USSR’s position on the Karabakh issue during this time?
They showed interest in a fair solution but did not act effectively to stop the conflict.
When did Azerbaijan declare independence?
On 18 October 1991, the Supreme Soviet adopted the Constitutional Act on State Independence.

95% of voters supported independence; 29 December 1991.
