Seven Years’/French and Indian War
A war fought in the colonies between the english and the French for posession of the Ohio River Valley. English won and the peace of Paris was negotiated.
Taxation without representation
A slogan widely used by colonists to protest against British taxes and policies. Colonists should not be taxed unless they had representation in parliament who could advocate for them.
Benjamin Franklin
Founding father. An early campaigner for American unity and served as the first US ambassador of France. Signed both the Dec of Independence and Constitution.
Thomas Paine’s Common Sense
Published pamphlet that argued that the colonists should free themselves from British rule and establish an independent government based on enlightenment ideals that would protect natural rights.
Declaration of Independence
The continental congress representing american colonies detailed its reasons for breaking political bonds with Great Britain. Drafted by Thomas Jefferson greatly influenced by John Locked
American Revolution
War for independence of the thirteen colonies from Great Britain fought on American soil
Loyalist Opposition
American colonists who remained in favor of British rule and loyal to crown. Persecuted by patriots supported by redcoats.
Continental Army
An army formed after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War by the colonies. It was supplemented by local militias. Commander in Chief was George washington. The continental army aided the victory of America
George Washington
Father of his country crucial in fighting, creating, and leading the united states of america. A farmer, surveyor, and soldier who rose to command the colonial forces in the revolutionary war.
Republican Motherhood
Idea that gave women more purpose to educate and nurture the future of America
Articles of Confederation
The first American constituion that established the US as a loose confederation of states with a weak congress and that it didn’t have the power to regulate commerce or collect taxes.
Northwest Ordinance and Territory
Established a government for the northwest territory outlined the process for admitting a new state to the union and guaranteed that newly created states would be equal to the original thirteen states
Constitutional COnvention
The meeting of state delegates in Philadelphia called to revise the Articles of Confederation
Constitution
Document which established the organization function and powers of the government and is considered the supreme law of the land. Followed the articles of confederation adn was drafted at the constitutional convention.
Anti-Federalists
Wanted a weak central government and more power to the people, opposed the ratification of the constitution
Federalists
Those who favored the constituion and wanted a strong central government.
Federalist Papers
A series of 85 essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay to promote the ratification of the United states constitution.
Alexander Hamilton
founding father, chief of staff, promoter of the constitution, founder of the nations financial system, and founder of the first American political party
James Madison
Us statemsman and political theorist. Father of the constitution because he was the primary author and the bill of rights and federalist papers
Bill of Rights
First ten amendments were added after its ratification as an addition to the main document which guarantees the protection of citizens rights freedom of speech religion press and other rights.
Federalism
A way of organizing a nation so that two or more levels of government have formal authority over the same area and people
Separation of Powers
A system that separated the powers of government into three separate branches to limit arbitrary excesses by the government.
French Revolution
Social and political revolution in france. Incited religious, economic and social changes in france. Toppled the monarchy and created a dilemma in the US as to whether they should help the people or the monarchy

Second president of the US. Federalist. Responsible for the Sedition and alien acts
