Periodic Table Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the vertical columns called in the periodic table?
Groups
What are the horizontal rows called?
Periods
What are the different groups in the periodic table?
Alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, metals, metalloids, halogens, and noble gases
What are the two series at the bottom of the periodic table called?
The Lanthanide Series and the Actinide Series
What are the properties of metal?
They have tensile strength, they are malleable (they can be hammered or rolled into thin sheets), they are good conductors of heat and electricity, and they are ductile
What are the properties of non-metals?
They are brittle, they are dull, and they are bad conductors of heat and electricity (non-metals are basically the opposite of metals)
What are metalloids?
Metalloids are elements that fall in both metal and non-metal properties (physical and chemical)
What are the metalloids on the periodic table?
B (Boron), Si (Silicon), Ge (Germanium), As (Arsenic), Sb (Antimony), and Te (Tellurium)
What is the element that is sometimes considered a metalloid?
At (Astatine)
What does it mean if elements are color codded red on the periodic table?
They are a gas at room temperature
What does it mean if elements are color codded blue on the periodic table?
They are a liquid at room temperature
What does it mean if elements are color codded black on the periodic table?
They are a solid at room temperature
What is the significance of vertical columns and the horizontal rows?
Vertical columns: similar chemical properties/and reactivities
Horizontal rows: same physical properties
