Periodic Table Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is meant by an “Element”?
A substance made of only one type of atom.
What are the three sub-atomic particles?
- Proton
- Neutron
- Electron
What is the charge on a Proton?
Positive
What is the charge on a Neutron?
No charge
What is the charge on an Electron?
Negative
What is the dense small core of an atom called?
The Nucleus
Which sub-atomic particles are found in the Nucleus?
Protons & Neutrons
What type of substances are shown on the Periodic Table
Elements
What are the rows of the Periodic table known as?
Periods
What are the columns of the Periodic table known as?
Groups
What is important about the ‘groups’ of the periodic table?
The groups show elements of similar properties.
What is the name of Group 1 of the periodic table?
Alkali Metals
What is the name of Group 2 of the periodic table?
Alkali Earth Metals
What is the name of the large block of element in the middle of the periodic table?
Transition metals
What is the name of Group 7 on the periodic table?
Halogens
What is the name of Group 8 on the periodic table?
Noble Gases
In an Element’s symbol on the periodic table, what does the ‘bottom’ number represent?
The ‘Atomic number’ - The number of protons in the atom.
In an Element’s symbol on the periodic table, what does the ‘top’ number represent?
The ‘Mass number’ - The total number of protons & neutrons in the atom.
What is meant by a “Molecule”?
Two or more atoms chemically joined together.
What does a ‘subscript’ number mean in a molecule? e.g. H₂O
The subcript tells you how many atoms of the previous element is present in the molecule. In H₂O there is 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen.
What is meant by the “Reactivity” of an element?
A measure of how quickly the element reacts.
On the left hand side of the periodic table (e.g. Alkali metals), does reactivity increase or decrease down the groups?
Increase
On the right hand side of the periodic table (e.g. Halogens), does reactivity increase or decrease down the groups?
Decrease
Where are metals found on the periodic table?
To the left of the ‘staircase’.
