15
Q

What is the name of Group 8 on the periodic table?

16
Q

In an Element’s symbol on the periodic table, what does the ‘bottom’ number represent?

A

The ‘Atomic number’ - The number of protons in the atom.

17
Q

In an Element’s symbol on the periodic table, what does the ‘top’ number represent?

A

The ‘Mass number’ - The total number of protons & neutrons in the atom.

18
Q

What is meant by a “Molecule”?

A

Two or more atoms chemically joined together.

19
Q

What does a ‘subscript’ number mean in a molecule? e.g. H₂O

A

The subcript tells you how many atoms of the previous element is present in the molecule. In H₂O there is 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen.

20
Q

What is meant by the “Reactivity” of an element?

A

A measure of how quickly the element reacts.

21
Q

On the left hand side of the periodic table (e.g. Alkali metals), does reactivity increase or decrease down the groups?

22
Q

On the right hand side of the periodic table (e.g. Halogens), does reactivity increase or decrease down the groups?

23
Q

Where are metals found on the periodic table?

A

To the left of the ‘staircase’.

24
Where are non-metals found on the periodic table?
To the right of the 'staircase'.
25
What is meant by a "Compound"?
Two (or more) different types of atoms which are chemically joined together.
26
What does the -ide ending of a compound mean? e.g. sodium chloride
Compoud made of two elements only. (A metal and a non-metal)
27
What does the -ate ending of a compound mean? e.g. potassium chlorate
Compoud made of three elements; a metal and a non-metal and oxygen.
