Periodic Table Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a period?
A period in the periodic table is one of the horizontal rows. All of those elements in the row have the same number of electron shells
What is a group?
There are 3 separate groups in the periodic table: Metallics, Non-metallics and Transition metals.
Physical properties of group 1
They all react with water.
What are the displacement reactions in group 7?
The reactivity of the halogens – the Group 7 elements - decreases as you move down the group. This can be shown by looking at displacement reactions.
Physical properties of Group 7
Do not conduct electricity and most have low melting point.
Trends in period 2
Elements on the left are metals, elements on the right are non-metals:
(melting points change from high to low
electrical and heat conductors on the left to insulators on the right
(metallic lustre on the left to dull on the right
Physical properties in group 0
The Group 0 elements are known as the noble gases. They are unreactive, which
means they do not react easily. They show some patterns in their chemical and
physical properties. For example, the elements lower down the group are slightly
more reactive than those at the top of the group.
Chemical properties of group 0
The highest occupied energy levels (outermost shells) of their atoms are full: helium atoms have two electrons in their outer energy level.
What is an element?
An element only contains one type of atom
What is a compound?
A compound contains different types of atoms that are chemically bonded together.
What is a mixture?
A mixture contains two or more substances mixed together. They can be elements by their own or compounds
