s
-sphere
-1st level
-2 electrons
-1 orbital
-least complex
-closest to the nucleus

-3 orbitals
-2 electrons each
-6 electrons
-2nd level
d
-5 orbitals

f
-7 orbitals
-14 electrons
-most complex
-furthest from the nucleus
-4th level
aufbau principle
1) the lowest amount of energy in an electron is in the sub-level
2) electrons will go into a p-orbital only when all the s-orbitals are full perviously to that
3) electrons will move up an energy level only when all the previous ones are full
pauli principle
1) if 2 electrons occupy the same orbital, they must have opposite spins
hunds principle
1) electrons will pair up in an orbital only when all orbitals in the same sub-level have one electron
2) when single electrons occupy different orbitals of the same sub-level, they ll have the same spin
