Periodic Table: Trends Flashcards

1
Q

Electronegativity
(how well an element can attract electrons)

A

-Noble gases are not electronegative
- F is the most electronegative atom

Ex: Cl has a higher electronegativity than K

Increases: Up and to the right

Q

Ionization energy

  • There are exceptions (12234556)
(energy required to remove an electron)
A

exceptions: 2A has a higher IE than 3A, and 5A has a higher IE than 6A

Increases: Up and to the Right

(if there have the same distance, it can’t be told which has a higher IE)

Also, Noble gases tend to have the highest since they have a full valence level, and Alkali metals have smallest(easier to remove)

Q

Electron Affinity

  • Exceptions included (12234556)
(Energy required to add an electron)
A

Energy required to add an electron

  • Exceptions: 1A is higher than 2A, and 4A is higher than 5A

Increase: Up and right

Also, F has the highest electron Affinity

Metals: low or non-existent, since they don’t gain electrons
Noble gasses= 0

Q

Atomic Radii And Ion size

A

Atomic radii: one half the distance between the nuclei(distance from nucleus to outer energy level)
ex: smallest to largest atomic radii: Ga+3, In+, Br-, I-

Increase: down and left

Q

Metallic character

A

It is the ease of an element to give away its valence electrons.

Depends on:
- the valence electron’s
- effective nuclear charge
-distance from the nucleus (increase: down and left)
