PERIODIC TABLE TWO Flashcards
(8 cards)
HOW DO ALKALI METALS REACT TO AIR?
alkali metals look dull and when cuts are shiny,
when in contact with air they become dull again
WRITE A NOTE ON THE ALKALINE EARTH METALS
they are group 2
beryllium
magnesium
calcium
are in this group
all elements in this group have two electron sin their outer shell
WRITE A NOTE ON THE HALAGONS
they are group 7
the elements in group 7 electrons in their outer shell
fluorine
chlorine
are in this group
elements in this group are trying to gain an electron because they want a full outer shell
WRITE A NOTE ON THE NOBLE GASSES
the elements in group 8 are all gasses and have full outer shells of electrons
helium
neon
argon
are in this grpup
WHAT IS IONIC BONDING/
lonic bonding produces a compound that is formed from a metal and a non-metal and is made up of ions. This occurs when one atom loses electrons and another atom gains electrons.
WHAT IS COVALENT BONDING?
Covalent bonding produces a compound formed from non-metals in which each atom shares electrons with another atom.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A METAL AND NON-METAL COMBINED?
When a metal and a non-metal are combined, the resultant compound is called after the name of the metal followed by the name of the non-metal, with its ending changed to '-ide'
eg.sodium+chlorine=sodium chloride
metal non-metal compound
COMBINDING METL ATOMS NON-METALS AND OXYGEN
When naming compounds formed by combining a metal atom, a non-metal atom and oxygen, the name of the metal comes first, the name of the non-metal comes next and the ending is '-ate'.
This occurs only when an oxygen atom is present.
For example:
potassium+phosphorus+oxygen
potassium phosphate
