Periodic Trends In Bonding And Stucture Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is the one constant property between all metals?
Ability to conduct electricity.
What is the definition of metallic bonding?
Metallic bonding is the strong electrostatic attraction between cations and delocalised electrons.
What are the three properties of metals?
Strong metallic bonds
High electrical conductivity
High melting and boiling points
Are metals soluble?
No. Any interactions would lead to a reaction rather than dissolving such as sodium with water.
Explain how the bonding in a simple molecular lattice is different from that in a giant covalent lattice.
A simple molecular lattice has London forces between molecules. A giant covalent lattice has covalent bonds between atoms.
Across periods 2 and 3, which elements have giant metallic lattices? (structure)
Li, Be, Na, Mg, and Al
Across periods 2 and 3, which elements have giant covalent lattices? (structure)
