Q

What is the trend in atomic radius as we go across a period ?

A

It decreases as we have the same Number of shells in a period but a higher nuclear charge and so the force of attraction will be greater and so the electron is pulled closer to the nucleus , hence a lower atomic radius

Q

Trend if atomic radius as we go down a group ?

A

It increases as we go down the group as there are more electron shells as we go down the group and so this increases the distance from the nucleus to outer electron . Furthermore , more shells means more shielding and this creates a. ‘ barrier’ that blocks attractive forces , easier for electron to be lost .
