Permit Test Flashcards
(127 cards)
What do you do when you approach a stop sign?
When you see a STOP sign, you must come to a complete stop behind the limit line (if there is one), crosswalk, or at the corner.
What do you do when you approach a yield sign?
A YIELD sign assigns the right-of-way to road users. If you see a YIELD sign ahead, be prepared to let other drivers crossing your path have the right-of-way. But unlike a STOP sign, a YIELD sign doesn’t require a driver to come to a complete stop in every situation.
How soon must a new California resident get a drivers license?
New residents must get a California drivers license within 10 days.
You may practice driving with an individual at least what age?
You may use your provisional instruction permit to practice driving with your parent, guardian, spouse, or any adult 25 years of age or older who holds a valid California drivers license.
Driving points?
4 points in 12 months, 6 points in 24 months, 8 points in 36 months. Most points or accidents stay on a person’s driving record for 3 years.
What are regulatory signs?
Regulatory signs inform road users of specific traffic laws or regulations and indicate when and where the regulations apply. Most regulatory signs are rectangular, with the longer dimension vertical, and have a white background.
What are warning signs?
Warning signs give notice of a situation that might not be readily apparent. These road signs warn you to slow down and watch for hazards or special conditions ahead. Most warning signs are yellow and diamond-shaped with black letters or symbols.
What are guide signs?
Guide signs show route designations, destinations, directions, distances, services, points of interest, and other geographical, recreational, or cultural information.
Construction signs?
Construction and maintenance signs are orange and most of them are diamond-shaped.
Traffic signals?
Traffic signals regulate traffic at an intersection. When you are facing this signal, stop at a marked limit line, if there is one, before entering a crosswalk or the intersection and remain stopped until the light turns green and you can proceed with reasonable safety. A right turn can be made against a red light after you come to a complete stop and yield to pedestrians and vehicles in your path. Do not turn if there is a NO TURN ON RED sign.
Can you turn left on a red light from a one way street to another one way street?
You may turn left against a red light from a one-way street onto another one-way street where traffic moves left if no sign prohibits the turn.
What does a flashing red signal mean?
FLASHING RED-a flashing red signal light means exactly the same as a stop sign: STOP. After stopping, proceed when safe and observe the right-of-way rules.
What do you do when the light is yellow?
When you see the yellow light, you should stop if it can be done so safely. If you can’t stop, enter the intersection carefully and continue across.
What does a flashing yellow signal mean?
FLASHING YELLOW-a flashing yellow signal light warns you to use caution. Slow down and be especially alert.
What do you do when the traffic signal goes out?
TRAFFIC SIGNAL BLACKOUT-if traffic signal lights stop working, you must come to a complete stop at the intersection and then proceed when all other road users have completely stopped. A blacked-out traffic signal should be treated just like a four-way stop intersection.
What do white lines mean?
WHITE LINES painted on the pavement indicate traffic going in your direction. When a white line is broken, you may change lanes if it is safe to do so.
Solid white line?
A solid white line is intended to discourage you from changing lanes. While in some states crossing a solid white line is illegal, it is legal to do so in California, unless the solid white line designates a turn.
What do yellow lines mean?
YELLOW LINES mark the center of a road used for two-way traffic. Broken yellow lines indicate where passing is permitted. You may pass if the line is broken on your side and the maneuver can be done safely.
Solid yellow line?
Solid yellow line means do not pass. You cannot pass another vehicle when a solid yellow line is on your side. Double solid yellow lines indicate that no vehicle may pass.
What do two sets of double yellow lines mean?
Two sets of solid double yellow lines that are two or more feet apart sometimes appear as road markings. These lines stand for a solid wall. Don’t drive on or over these lines. You may not make a left turn or U-turn in this space. Cross only at plainly marked openings.
Left turn lane?
Two yellow lines on both sides of the lane-inner line is broken, outer line is solid-are used to indicate a center left turn lane.
White curb meaning?
You may only stop long enough to pick up or drop off passengers or mail. (These curbs are usually found at airport passenger terminals.)
Green curb meaning?
You may park for a limited time. The time limit is usually found on a sign or painted on the curb.
Yellow curb meaning?
You may stop here only long enough to load or unload passengers or freight no longer than posted. Drivers of noncommercial vehicles are usually required to stay with their vehicle.
