Q

Liberal feminists

A

Liberal feminist rejects the idea that the private sphere should be politicised arguing that feminism should focus on removing legal and institutional barriers to equality in the public sphere. They believe that as long as women have the legal right to make choices, to stay at home or work, then gender equality can be achieved without interfering in personal relationships.

(equal rights in law, access to education, property, and civic participation)

Q

Social feminists

A

Social feminists argue that the personal is in fact political via economic lens, as domestic labour and childcare sustains capitalism by ensuring future workforce. They contend that women’s unpaid domestic work makes them economically dependent on men, reinforcing traditional gender roles.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman, in women and Economics, argued that women’s subordination stems from economic reliance on men and that collective childcare and communal living arrangements could help liberate women from women domestic oppression.

Q

Radical feminists

A

They modify and extend this idea further by arguing that the personal is inherently political because power dynamics are embedded and exist in all relationships, including within families, marriages and sexual interactions.

In particular, this viewpoint is reinforced by Kate Millet, in Sexual Politics, whereby she describes how traditional gender roles condition women into submissive positions, even in private relationships, ensuring that patriarchy continues to thrive in everyday life. This nature of female subordination is further reinforced via male dominance in the domestic sphere which is illuminated via sexual violence, which can be seen as not only personal violence but also as political tools of oppression.

Q

Post modern feminists

A

Postmodern feminists align with radical feminists’ assertion that male power and oppression operates on many levels such as the domestic sphere, they criticise radical feminists for portraying women as a homogenous group.

Bell hooks, in Feminist Theory: From the Margin to Centre, argued that Black and working-class women experience oppression differently from white, middle-class women and that feminism must broaden its understanding of how power structures not only operates both in the public and private sphere but intersects and mutates across race, class and sexuality.

Conclusion

A

While feminists agree that gender inequality exists beyond the public sphere, they remain divided on whether the personal realm should be a primary site of female struggle or if focusing on structural reforms is a more effective approach
