Q

Reflexive

Some verbs don’t make sense without saying ‘myself/yourself’. Reflexive verbs use the reflexive pronouns with the meaning “oneself”. We use reflexive verbs when the subject and object of the verb are the same. For example, you carry out an action for yourself and not for someone else.
*Example: I wash myself.
You get yourself dressed.

A

mich - myself
dich - yourself
sich / sich / sich - himself / herself / itself
uns - ourselves
euch yourselves (pl)
sich / Sich - themselves (pl) / yourself (f)

Example: Ich wasche mich.
Sie ziehen sich an.

4
Q

Reciprocal

Reciprocal verbs use the reflexive pronouns with the meaning “each other”. Therefore, we can only use reciprocal verbs in the plural.
*Example: we see one another.

A

uns - each other (we)
sich - each other (they)

Example: wir sehen uns.

Reciprocal verbs include among others: sich kennen, sich sehen, sich lieben, sich streiten, sich einigen.

5
Q

Reflexive dative

Some verbs don't make sense without saying 'to myself / to yourself'. We use the reflexive pronoun in the dative if there is also an accusative object (which then makes the person the indrect object).
*Example: We clean our teeth.
I wash my face.
I put my coat on.
He brushes his hair.
A

mir - to myself
dir - to yourself
sich / sich / sich - to himself / herself / itself
uns - to ourselves
euch - to yourselves (pl)
sich / Sich - to themselves (pl) / to yourself (f)

Example: Wir putzen uns die Zähne.
Ich wasche mir das Gesicht.
Ich ziehe mir der Mantel an.
Er bürstet sich die Haare.
