what did charles do in terms of economic policy?

how successful was reducing expenditure?
-not very
-the royal household was responsible for £260,000 worth of spending with appalling waste and a daily budget of £25 + 5 shillings
-they couldn’t risk alienating the royal servants so continued this lavish lifestyle
how successful were customs?
quite
-due to peace times charles was able to establish good trade opportunities such as a monopoly on iberian trade and it was all good provided he did not go to war
how successful was fiscal feudalism?
-very
-stated that any man who was eating more than 40£ a year should be knighted and those who didn’t were fined
-this method raised about £170,000 and was technically legal
monopolies and grants- how successful?
-quite
-this raised roughly £100000 for the king
-this was greatly judged tho such as popish soap which was apparently of inferior quality to the independently crafted soap
how successful was ship money?
-it was the most successful of the economic assistances however it had questions as it was deemed that england was not in an emergency (but the king said it was so it was an emergency) and when this came about a second year it was clear that it was a tax which is illegal without parliament
-it raised £190,000 per year from 34-40
opposition to taxes during personal rule?
-hmapdens case: a member of the buckinghamshire gentry refused to pay this tax and pushed in court however charles one by the slimmest margin of 7/12 judges siding in his favour
-this was however a moral victory for hampden
what did clarendon say in regards to the situation?
he said that personal rule was “the greatest calm and the fullest measure of felicity that any people in any age for so long time together have green blessed with to the wonder and envy of all
how did charles exploit the city of London
they had shown immense loyalty to them in the years of which he took out a loan between his second and third parliaments
-however when he put the city on trial for not finding enough people to settle in Londonderry and fined them £70,000 he alienated the whole city and humiliated them
