Situationism
behavior is determined more by situations than by personality traits
Situationism Challenges
the most basic definition of personality; personality is a set of traits that are relatively stable across situations and time
If Situationisms Hold True,
then personality does not exist
Self-Monitoring
involves being sensitive to cues of situational appropriateness
People High in Self-Monitoring
alter their behavior to match the situation, so they exhibit low levels of consistency
People Low in Self-Monitoring
are less able to alter their self-presentations to match situational demands, so they tend to be more consistent across situations
Strong Situation
a situation that restricts the expression of personality
Strong Situations Components
- Highly influence behavior
- Suppress individual traits
- Most people respond in the same way
- e.g. funerals
Weak Situation
a situation that allows the free expression of personality
Weak Situations Components
- Minimally influence behavior
- Allows individual traits to be expressed
- People vary in how they respond
- e.g. playground
Example of Moderately Strong Situations
concerts

ii) Face everything and rise
Depression is
anger turned inward

Basic Tendencies Are
dispositional traits determined largely by biological processes
Characteristic Adaptations Are
adjustments to situational demands
Interactionism

Sometimes people are
themselves in a situation
