What characterizes personality disorders
Chronic set of behaviors, emotions thoughts that are different from cultural expectations and cause clinically significant distress or impairment in functioning. Personality disorders are characterized by chronic interpersonal difficult, problems with identity and sense of self, and inability to function in society. They are pervasive and inflexible traits stable across a long period of time.
What are some difficulties in diagnosing personality disorders
What are the different clusters?
Cluster A: odd eccentric and unusual behavior
- Paranoid
-Schizoid
-Schizotypal
Cluster B: dramatic, emotional, erratic
- Histrionic
- Narcissistic
- antisocial
-borderline personality disorder
Cluster C: anxiety and fearfulness
- avoidant
- dependent
- obsessive compulsive disorder
Why are Personality disorders hard to diagnosis?
Not sharply defined board overlapping trait, characteristics exist on a spectrum which makes it hard to draw the line between normal and abnormal. Categories are not mutually exclusive many disorders share traits and overlap or are comorbid.
Paranoid Personality Disorder
Pervasive distrust and suspiciousness of others such that their motives are interpreted as malevolent
Schizoid Personality disorder
Pervasive pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of expressions of emotions in interpersonal settings
Narcissistic Personality disorder
Pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood present in variety of contexts
Anti social personality disorder and how it’s different from psychopathy
ASPD is defined by a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others and rules of society through deceitful, aggressive and antisocial behavior occurring since age 15. Psychopathy places more emphasis on personality structure. Psychopathy is an inadequate conscious development either severely Impaired or non existent and have a more severe lack of empathy than ASPD.
Borderline Personality Disorder
Pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self image, and affects and marked impulsivity (response to environmental triggers without thinking of long term consequences) beginning in early adulthood.
Avoidant Personality Disorder
Pervasive pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy and hyper sensitivity to negative evaluation
Obsessive Compulsive personality disorder
Pervasive pattern of preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and mental and interpersonal control at the expense of flexibility, openness, and efficiency
