What are the four designation categories
special-sensitive, critical-sensitive, noncritical-sensitive and nonsensitive
Special Sensitive
Civilian national security positions that may potentially cause inestimable damage to the national security or adverse impact to the efficiency of the DoD or military services
Critical Sensitive
have the potential to cause exceptionally grave damage to the nation’s security
Noncritical Sensitive
Can cause significant damage to national security
Nonsensitive
do not require access to classified information or performance of national security sensitive duties.
Special access requirements are designed to provide an additional layer of security to some of our nation’s most valuable assets

positions designated as nonsensitive, moderate-risk public trust
Federal Investigation Tier 3
positions designated as noncritical-sensitive, and/or requiring Confidential, Security or DOE L access eligibility and military accessions
Federal Investigation Tier 4
positions designated as nonsenstive, high-risk public trust
Federal Investigation Tier 5
positions designated as critical-sensitive or special-sensitive and/or requiring DOE “Q” access to Top Secret SCI
