Simile
Comparing one thing to another, saying one thing is like another (She’s as busy as a bee, I ran like the wind).
Metaphor
Describing one thing as another which isn’t literally applicable (She is an angel, I have a broken heart).
Hyperbole / Exaggeration
An exaggerated statement (The teacher gave us a ton of work, I haven’t seen you in ages).
Repetition
Using the same word or phrase multiple times (Home sweet home, it is what it is)
Rhetorical Question
A question said as a statement, for effect, not for information (Are you crazy?, Who cares?)
Alliteration
Closely using multiple of the same consonant sounds (Big Beefy Bliss, Krispy Kreme).
Pun
A play on words (So rice to meet you, I told a chemistry joke, but there was no reaction).
Onomatopoeia
A word that imitates a sound (Boom, drip drip).
Anecdote
A short story about a real past experience
Imperative language
Language used to give commands, orders or to make requests (Pass the salt).
Colloquial language
Informal language (Ain’t, gonna, wanna)
Inclusive language
Language that avoids excluding particular people (Teachers and students, Everyone)
Cumulative language
Has an independent clause followed by one or more subordinate clause that adds more detail (She ran, smiling, as she crossed the finish line)
Juxtaposition
2 things being seen, placed or written close together to create a contrast effect (Good and evil, night and day)
