Pevensey Flashcards
(15 cards)
Where is Pevensey Bay ?
East Sussex, England, located on the southeast coast of the UK.
What is a key natural defence strategy there and what does it protect ?
Shingle bank - Protects 50km2 of land, 10,000 properties, key road and railway links which would be at risk to flooding.
Why is Pevensey at flood risk ?
Pevensey Bay is below sea level.
Why is Pevensey at a constant erosion risk ?
The shingle beach naturally erodes meaning constant replenishment.
What is beach replenishment at Pevensey ?
Sand and gravel is hoovered up by dredging boat and then sprayed onto the lower beach at high tide.
It takes place 3 times a year.
2,000 tonnes of sediment per day and it saves trucks driving through the towns.
What did the removal of groynes to do Pevensey ?
150 Old wooden groynes were removed as they interfered with natural shingle movement.
Encourages longshore drift to maintain the beach.
What is the long term plan at pevensey ?
Managed retreat - Some flood-prone land is left to flood naturally as part of a sustainable approach.
What is the Harbour Arm at Pevensey doing to sediment ?
Trapping sediment and preventing it from reaching the bay.
What is the strategy in place now ?
Hold the line
What are the 3 main defence strategies ?
Beach replenishment, Beach recycling, Reprofiling
What does the beach recycling strategy include ?
Strong LSD drives stones from west to east so they bring the stones back down and spread them evenly whilst reprofiling.
What does the reprofiling strategy include ?
Change gradient of beach to absorb the most energy, Spread the sand evenly
What is behind the beach which is in danger ?
Pevensey levels a freshwater marsh which is below sea level.
What towns are at risk to sea level rise ?
Wartling and Bexhill
What key road is in danger ?
A259
