Calcium Carbonate (TUMS)
- Class: Antacid
- Neutralizes gastric acid
TUMS Side Effects
- CONSTIPATION
- Diarrhea
- GI upset
TUMS Patient Teaching
- Take w/ meals/juice otherwise it doesn’t absorb very well
Famotidine (Pepcid) & Cimetidine (Tagament)
Class: Antacids (H2 receptor antagonists)
- Helps neutralize gastric acid
Side Effects of Famotidine (Pepcid)/Cimetidine (Tagament)
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Insomnia
Patient Teaching for Famotidine (Pepcid)/Cimetidine (Tagament)
- S/S of overdose: N/V, increased saliva production, dyspnea, and tachycardia
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)
- Prevents nausea but not vomiting
- Sensory neuropathy reported w/ chronic intake 500+mg/day
Patient Teaching Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)
- 25mg PO Q6-8H
- Discontinue if loss of feeling & loss of balance
Doxylamine Succinate (Unisom)
Class: Antihistamine & sleep aid
- Gets prescribed in conjunction with B6
- Take at bedtime with a full glass of water
Side effects of Doxylamine Succinate (Unisom)
- Sleepiness/dizziness
- Dry mouth
- Anxiety
- Urinary retention
- Edema
Ondansetron (Zofran)
- Blocks impulses to the vomiting centers in the brain preventing N/V
- Report chest pain or palpitations
Side Effects of Ondansetron
- Mild headache
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Constipation
- QT prolongation (dysrhythmia in mom/fetus)
Docusate Sodium (Colace)
Class: Laxative - Stool softener
- Allows water and fat to penetrate the fecal mass
Side Effects of Docusate Sodium (Colace)
- May develop hepatotoxicity if used excessively
- Increases the absorption of some medications
- Bloating, gas, stomach cramps
Patient Teaching of Docusate Sodium (Colace)
- Not for long term use
- Take w/full glass of water
- Discontinue if diarrhea, weakness, or heart palpitations
Psyllium (Metamucil)
Class: Laxative - Bulk Forming
- Pulls in water and expands resulting in increased peristalsis
Patient Teaching with Psyllium (Metamucil)
- May cause bloating
- Slowly increase fiber intake to minimize bloating
- Take several hours apart from other medications
- Drink 1.5+ liters of water a day
Ferrous Sulfate (Feosol)
Elevates the serum iron concentration which can be converted to hemoglobin or stored later for conversion
Adverse Effects of Ferrous Sulfate (Feosol)
- GI distress
- Black stools
- Severe allergic reactions
Patient Teaching with Ferrous Sulfate (Feosol)
- Take on empty stomach or 2hrs after meals
- Avoid antacids or antibiotics (can interfere w/absorption)
- Taking Vit C and iron together helps absorb the iron better
RhoGAM
Class: Immune globulin
- Sterilized solution made from human blood, prevention of Rh sensitization in Rh negative mother, suppresses the immune response, and prevents hemolytic disease of the newborn in the next pregnancy
Patient Teaching of RhoGAM
- Must be administered within 72 hours after Rh incompatible delivery, miscarriage, abortion, or trauma
- Report S/S of allergic reaction immediately
