Explain the importance of legitimate pharmaceutical tablet markings and how they can be used in casework
Markings are required from the FDA that are used for recognition. We can use them as a presumptive test when compared to a database
What is a drug
All medicinal substances and preparations intended for external and internal use in diagnosis cure mitigation treatment or prevention of disease in humans or animals
What is a legend drug
Drugs that need a prescription
Do all pharmaceuticals contain controlled substances

Is it legal to have a prescription drug without a prescription
No
What is required for the BCA to accept a legit pharmaceutical
Markings must indicate a controlled substance and have a court date
Why might an imprint be incorrect
Clandestine, old database, tampered with or damaged
Can you use a partial marking
Yes as long as other criteria is consistent with confirmatory results
What are signs of tampering with a capsule
Uneven contents, do not match description, leakage of capsule
How to divide 3 populations of tablets
Separate based off appearance. Run one tablet from highest control status, if multiple one with highest population.
Why does the BCA only analyze 1 tablet
It is our policy to only analyze 1 and if more is needed and requested to do so at that time. This allows us to get our results to the attorneys faster
Do we report salt forms of pharmaceuticals
No but can report the isomer if the markings say which one it is
