OTC (chemists/supermarkets), prescription by doctors or hospitals, naturopaths - herbal based/holistic, “street” sources synthetic/legal or illegal
What are some of the issues with OTC drugs
People can overdose, misuse, unintentionally poly-pharmacy, become reliant, not read the instructions, may not be the appropriate strength required
What are some things you must consider
know your drugs as your responsible, consider state/federal legislation of legal administration of drugs, poly pharmacy, compliance, natural remedies, individual reactions, patient history, names of drugs
What are some factors that affect medication compliancey
Cultural background, language barriers, laziness, socioeconomic factors, age, inconvenience, forgetting, unpleasant administration
What are some forms of pharmaceutics/formulations of drugs
tablets, EC, Caps, Controlled/Sustained release preparations, Suspension, IV, Powders, Topical, Drops, Creams (water-based) or ointments (fat-based)
When administrating medications PO, what are some of the liquid states you may encounter?
Linctus (thickened), elixirs (alcohol solvent), tinctures (more concentrated elixirs), suspensions/emulsions (insoluble preparations)
