What does militarisation entail?
I am introduced to personal administration; weapons handling, physical fitness; first aid; firefighting and damage control; sea sense; military values and standards and an overview of Command, Leadership and Management.
What are the two exercises undertaken during militarisation?
BLD (Basic Leadership Development): Lessons in planning, orders and navigation.
ABLE (Assessed Basic Leadership Exercise): Field exercise on Dartmoor, first major assessment for OC, opportunity to show leadership skills, grit, courage and determination in challenging environment.
What does marinisation entail?
Building upon the leadership and management skills in militarisation and applying them to a maritime environment. Learning essential seamanship skills such as navigation and boat handling. More strategic studies, ending with an assessed essay and presentation on a military topic.
Initial Sea Time - MLD - MARL.
What is Initial Sea Time?
During marinisation, it is 6 weeks serving aboard an operational warship, providing a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of life at sea.
Work in different departments, assisting Officer of the Day responsibilities and learning about platform capability.
Ending with a written exam and oral board to show understanding in these areas.
What is MLD?
Maritime Leadership Development. Consolidate skills learnt, opportunity to prepare for MARL.
What is the MARL?
Maritime Assessed Leadership Exercise. Use skills such as leadership, military understanding, maritime tactical estimate, navigation, and seamanship. Use motor whalers and Vahana craft to perform realistic military scenarios on the river dart, such as escort.
