What are the sling load references?
TM 4-48.09 - Multi Service Helicopter Sling Load: Basic Operations and Equipment
TM 4-48.10 - Single-Point Load Rigging Procedures
TM 4-48.11 Dual-Point Load Rigging Procedures
Helicopter Sling Load Method
The helicopter sling load method of carrying cargo and equipment overcomes many of the obstacles that hinder other modes of movement
Uses of Sling Loads
- Used extensively in ship to shore movement of cargo and equipment
- Movement of supplies and equipment over the battlefield
- Shore to Ship (replenishment of ships)
- Firepower emplacement
Sling Load Classifications
Certified
Unique
Prohibited
Suitable
Allowable Cargo Load (ACL) for external loads
UH-60A - 8,000 lbs
UH-60L - 9,000 lbs
CH-47D - 17,000 front or rear hook, 26,000 center hook, and 25,000 lb combination of front and rear
Advantages (6) to a sling load operation
Rapid movement of heavy oversized equipment or emergency items directly to the user
Multiple flight routes and landing sites to enhance sustainability and security of ground unit
Establishment of multiple landing sites to support the maneuvering unit requirements
Movement flexibility for the ground commander to accomplish the tactical mission
Bypass surface obstacles
Rapid relocation of supplies and equipment
What is one limitation to sling load operations
Atmospheric conditions (pressure, altitude, temperature, and winds) affect the helicopters lift capacity
What should the supported unit do prior to any sling load mission
they should coordinate with the aviation unit prior to any sling load mission to determine the accurate lifting capability of the helicopter
What factors affect the helicopter lift capacity
Wind
Humidity
Altitude
Temperature
Fuel
Cargo Hook Release
- Cargo hook can be opened electronically or manually by the aircrew
- Cargo hook can be manually released by ground crew
- CH-47 center hook release lever is NOT accessible by ground crew. Must manually depress the spring-loaded keeper and remove apex fitting from cargo hook
Three units involved in sling load operations
Supported unit, aviation unit, and receiving unit
Who makes the final decision on whether the cargo will be moved
the PILOTs
What are the three phases of a sling load operation?
Phase 1 - Preparation and Rigging
Phase 2 - Inspection of Preparation and Rigging
Phase 3 - Sling Load Operation
What is the hookup team when using a static discharge wand
Signalman
Static Wand Person
Hookup Person
Where does the signalman position himself
He positions himself at the aircraft’s 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock position whichever is opposite of aircraft emergency area, maintaining visual contact with the pilot
Which two people are necessary if they have to manually open the cargo hook?
Hookup person and static wand person
Aircraft emergency area
determined through prior coordination with the aviation unit
Rendezvous area
NCOIC determines an area where ground crew can assemble in the event of an emergency. The rendezvous point should be opposite from the aircraft emergency area
What form, TM, and appendix must you inspect the load with
SLING LOAD INSPECTION RECORD DA Form 7382, TM 4-48.09, Appendix 1
What are the inspector qualifications?
Be in the grade of E4 or above and be a graduate of one of the following: AASLT, pathfinder, or sling load inspector certification course
Can units train or certfiy personnel as sling load inspectors
no
3 factors of inflight stability
W proper weight; min safe weight is 500lbs
A proper air speed
D proper drag surface
What is the least preferred method to improve inflight stability
reducing airspeed
What is a complete sling set?
Apex and 4 sling legs
