What is a family?
The foundation of all human society
What is a nuclear family?
The most common type of family in modern Britain, two parents and one or more child living in the same house
What is a reconstituted family?
When divorced adults choose to remarry which leads to the creation of a reconstituted family
What are responsibilities?
Actions/Duties that you are expected to carry out, eg: adults have the duty of earning money for their family or caring for children
What did Rabbi Menachem Schneerson say about family?
'’In the absence of harmony between one’s own family, we can hardly expect to find harmony between strangers’’
What did prophet Muhammad say about men in a household?
'’A man is the guardian of his family (household) and is responsible for his subjects’’
What are some changing views on roles within families?
Trad views are changing
Relationships between men and women are seen as partnerships
More women are working after marriage
More men are becoming ‘house-husbands’
In terms of religious practices, what are parents expected to do?
Take children to their place of worship Teach them how to understand sacred texts Teach them how and when to pray Join religious festivals Understand the importance of rituals

This means the role of the mother in passing on their faith is fundamental
How do Christians regard marriage?
It’s God given (a sacrament)
It’s a lifelong commitment
It’s the best basis for creating an environment into which children should be born

What is cohabitation?
To live together in a sexual relationship without being married
What are some Christian attitudes towards cohabitation?
Some denominations are more tolerant of cohabitation but think that marriage is the ideal (Liberal Christians)
Other denominations such the Catholic Church do not accept cohabitation and expect a couple to not have sex before marriage
Some Baptist churches refuse to marry couples who are cohabitating
What are some Muslim attitudes towards cohabitation?
It is always wrong
A couple should be married first before living together
What are Christian attitudes on adultery?
Marriage is sexually exclusive and should not be shared with anyone else
Marriage is a gift from God- adultery goes against this
Committing adultery destroys the special relationship between a husband and wife
Committing adultery can destroy the family unit
What does the Bible say about adultery?
'’Thou shall not commit adultery’’
What are some Muslim attitudes on adultery?
Sex outside of marriage is disapproved of
Marriage is a lifelong union based on trust
Adultery is seen is harmful to society
Adultery is seen as a form of theft (the worst kind)
The Qur’an teaches that it is wrong

Methodist Church think divorce is best avoided, remarriage is permitted, no minister can be forced to conduct a remarriage against their will
Catholics do not recognise divorce as marriage is a sacrament that cannot be dissolved
