The act or practice of opening a vein by incision or puncture to remove blood as therapeutic treatment

Fasting Blood glucose
Can’t eat or drink after midnight
STAT
Draw the Lab Immediately

If level is critical call the doctor
(Doesn’t mean you don’t give the medicine)

3-4 inches above site
Don’t leave for no longer than 1 minute

Improper tourniquet can cause

Antecubital fossa
Inner arm (at the bend)
Medial Cubital Vein
1st choice (vein in the middle)
Cephalic Vein
2nd Choice ( vein closest to thumb side )
Basilic vein
3rd choice (outside vein on pinky side )
LAST RESORT
leg veins
MUST HAVE A DOCTORS ORDER
Survey of antecubital area
Identify all 3
Veins -spongy resilient tube like curvature
Palpate all 3 beginning with median Cubital
Enhance
Tap area Massage upward Dangle in down ward position Apply heat Rotate wrist Lower the arm below the level of the heart
Basilic vein precaution
Closest yo nerves And can cause permanent injury
Venipuncture and IV sites
NEVER DRAW BLOOD ABOVE AN IV SITE
IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY
Shut off for 2 minutes
Apply tourniquet BELOW the IV site and above the intended puncture site
DISCARD FIRST 5 ML OF BLOOD
Document it was performed below and active IV site
