What is a phobia?
An irrational fear of an object or situation

Related to a persons feelings or mood

Refers to process of knowing, including thinking, reasoning, remembering, believing
What is specific phobia according to the DMS-5?
Phobia of an objects, such as an animal or body part, or situation such as flying or having an injection
What is social anxiety according to the DMS-5?
Phobia of a social situation such as public speaking or using a public toilet
What is agoraphobia according to the DMS-5?
Phobia of being outside or in a public place
What are the behavioural characteristics of phobias?
Panic - crying, screaming, running away
Avoidance - avoiding phobic stimulus, can affect everyday life
Endurance - Stay in room with spider to keep eye on it
What are emotional characteristics of phobias?
Anxiety - Unpleasant state of arousal, cant relax, very difficult to experience positive emotion, can be long term
Fear - Immediate, extremely unpleasant, intense, shorter periods
Emotional response is unreasonable - Anxiety or fear response is disproportionate to threat posed
What are cognitive characteristics of phobias?
Selective attention - Hard to look away
Irrational beliefs - Unfounded thoughts in relation to phobic stimulus
Cognitive distortions - Perceptions may be inaccurate and realistic
