What are the behavioural characteristics of an individual with a phobia? (3)
- Inappropriate response=aggression/avoidance
- Response interferes with normal routine
- Stress response when exposed to object/situation
What are the emotional characteristics of an individual with a phobia? (2)
- Persistent and obvious fear
- Feelings of panic and being overwhelmed
What are the cognitive characteristics of an individual with a phobia? (1)
-Awareness of how their fear is irrational
How long must behavior associated with having a phobia be present in children?
At least 18 months
What are the three types of phobia?
- Specific phobias
- Social phobias
- Agoraphobia

What are social phobias and what is the main example?
Anxiety due to the fear of behaviours in social situations
-e.g. public speaking
What is agoraphobia and what happens to an agoraphobic?
NOT THE FEAR OF OPEN SPACES
- An extreme form of a panic attack
- An agoraphobic have a fear of panicking+/losing control in unfamiliar places and not being able to leave
What are the symptoms of agoraphobia? (4)
- Increased heart rate
- Palpitations
- Nausea
- The fear of losing consciousness
What do agoraphobics prefer to stay at home?
It’s a familiar environment (rather than a potentially anxiety-inducing environment)
