What is compression?
Storing more data on a memory card by compressing the files
What is contrast?
Difference between the darkest and brightest part of a photo
What is Depth of Field?
Area of focus controlled by the aperture. Large (f/16), all sharp, small(f/4), mostly fuzzy
What is exposure?
Amount of light your camera captures while taking a photo. Combo of aperture and shutter.
What is f/stop?
Notation for relative aperture.
Lens: 100mm
F/stop: f/2
Open: 50%
What is flare?
Random light caused by scattering and reflection. Lens hit by hard light.
What is high key?
Image made up of light tones.
White model, white background, white clothes
Good for moving children
What is ISO?
Films sensitivity to light.
Low photo conditions = high ISO
high photo, bright lights = low ISO
What is JPEG?
Joint Photographic Experts Group
File format. Standard for compressing photos
What is key light?
Main light source in photo.
What is macro?
Lens setting for taking close ups
What is a megapixel?
How to measure resolution of camera.
Equals one million pixels
What is a pixel?
Tiny square building blocks that make up an image.
What is Raw?
Photo data directly off image sensor with no compression
What is resolution?
How many pixels per inch
What is shutter speed?
Measurement of how long the shutter is open for.
Shutter speed and aperture control the total amount of light reaching into camera.
What is SLR?
Single lens reflex, means the camera has a viewfinder that sees through the lens.
What are
Standard lense
Telephoto lense
Wide angle lense
Standard: to see as well as the human eye
Telephoto: long lens to bring things closer
Wide angle: wide view for outdoor landscape
What is white balance?
Camera function to compensate light. Settings include Cloudy, sunny, daylight, fluorescent, incandescent, auto
What is Zoom optical and Zoom digital?
Optical - glass elements cover the entire zoom range. Better
Digital - cropping an image without actually gaining any detail.
What is Aperture?
Small opening inside the lens to control the amount of light passing through lens. Controls light and depth of field.
