Photosyntheis, Respiration, Mitosis Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which a cell captures energy from sunlight and uses it to make energy
What is respiration?
The process by which cells obtain energy from glucose
What is an autotroph?
An organism that makes its own food
What is a heterotroph?
An organism that can’t make its own food
What are chloroplasts?
It captures energy and changes it to a form of energy cells can use in making food.
What is chlorophyll?
The main pigment in photosynthesis
What is mitosis?
When the cells nucleus decides into 2 new nuclei and one set of DNA is distributed into each daughter cell
Which types of organisms go through photosynthesis?
Plants
Which type of organisms go through respiration?
Plants and animals
What are the steps that happen during photosynthesis?
Plants and some other organisms absorb energy from sun and use energy to convert carbon dioxide and waters into sugars and oxygen
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
Suns energy and 6CO2 and 6H20 combine to make C6H12O6 and 6O2
What are steps that happen during respiration?
Sugars and oxygen combine to make water, carbon dioxide, and energy
What is the chemical equation for respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 combine to 6O2 + 6H20
What is another name for glucose?
Sugars
What organelle is responsible for the process of photosynthesis?
Chloroplasts
What organelle is responsible for the process of respiration?
Mitochondria
Why do cells go through cell division?
Bc it allows organisms to grow and repair damaged structures and reproduce
What happens in each step of the cell cycle?
Interphase- DNA copies itself, cell grows
Prophase- Chromosomes condense and nuclear membrane dissolves
Metaphase- Chromosomes line up in middle of cell
Anaphase- Chromosomes move to opposite sides of cell
Telophase- A new nucleus forms around each set of cells
Cytokines- Cell decides into 2 new cells
