Photosynthesis Flashcards
(10 cards)
Simple photosynthesis formula.
CO2 + water = sugars + oxygen
What are the main components of chloroplasts?
An Outer membrane, an Inner membrane and the thylakoid membrane;
arranged in stacks called grana
Why are leaves green?
Chlorophyll absorb two lights;
Blue (430 nm)
Red (660 nm)
Green light is absorbed poorly, reflecting back to the eye.
What gives flowers & fruits their colour?
Carotenoids; yellow
dissipate excessive light
avoid damage to chlorophyll
Anthocyanins; red-blue
What structures in chlorophyll allow sunlight absorption?
Porphyrin ring absorbs light.
Hydrophobic tail holds chlorophyll in the thylakoid membrane.
Where is chlorophyll held?
In multiprotein complexes called photosystems.
What components make up photosytems?
Antenna; complexes that capture light energy.
Reactions centre; converts light energy into chemical energy.
Give a step-by-step process of Photosystems
See notes x
Where in the chloroplast are ATP and NADPH made?
The stroma
