Photosynthesis Flashcards
What does an ATP molecule consist of?
Adenine, the sugar ribose, and 3 phosphate groups.
What is a Heterotroph?
An organism that gets food by consuming (eating) other organisms🍗🍓🌭
Ex: Humans/Animals
What is an Autotroph?
An organism that makes its own food using the energy in sunlight🌲🌱🌞🍐
Ex: Plants
What is Energy?
Energy is the ability to do work☔️⛈
When does ATP release energy?
When it breaks bonds between its phosphate groups 🅾🅾 🅾
What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process that uses light energy to produce food molecules🌞🌱🌧🍎
Explain where photosynthesis occurs.
Photosynthesis occurs in organelles called chloroplasts.🍏
What is light?💡
Light is a form of energy. Sunlight is a mixture of all the different colors of visible light.❤️💛💚💙💜🌈
What are pigments?🐷
They’re light absorbing molecules that capture the sounds energy
What is Adenosine Triphosphate?
(ATP) is a chemical compound cells use to store and release energy.
Define Chlorophyll
It is the principal pigment in photosynthetic organisms. Chlorophyll absorbs blue-violet and red light, but reflects green light.👒
Name two structures of the chloroplasts
Thylakoids: saclike photosynthetic membranes that contain chlorophyll and other pigments and are arranged in stocks called GRANA.
Stroma: the fluid portion outside of the thylakoids
What is NADP?
It is an Ion carrier that can hold up to 2 high energy electrons and 1 hydrogen ion NADP -> NADP H+
What do light dependent reactions require?
Require~ •light •light absorbing pigments •and water for... -NADPH -ATP -Oxygen
What do light independent reactions require?
They don’t use light energy
•they use carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, NADPH and ATP to make energy-rich Carbon compounds
