Photosynthesis Flashcards
(10 cards)
Where does the light dependent reaction of photosynthesis occur?
The thylakoid membranes of the chloroplast.
What is photolysis?
The use of light energy to split water into H+, O2 and e-.
What are the products of photolysis?
H+, O2 and e-.
What are the products of the light dependent reaction of photosynthesis?
ATP and reduced NADP.
What happens to the oxygen produced in photolysis?
It is either:
- Used in respiration
- released into the atmosphere.
Where does the light independent reaction take place?
The stroma of the chloroplast.
What does carbon dioxide combine with in the Calvin cycle?
The 5 carbon compound, ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP).
Which enzyme catalyses the reaction of carbon dioxide and RuBP?
Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBISCO).
What product is formed from the reaction between carbon dioxide and RuBP?
The 3 carbon compound, glycerate-3-phosphate (GP). (x2 remember)
How is GP converted to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (GALP)?
GP is reduced to form GALP using the hydrogen from reduced NADP and energy from ATP.
