Photosynthesis Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which plants make carbohydrate as food using sunlight energy
What is the equation for photosynthesis
H2O+CO2—( light and chlorophyll )——> carbohydrate+O2
How is starch produced
Sunlight energy is stored in starch. Starch needs sun to appear.
What is the test for starch
- boiling water—> beaker
- dip leaf in beaker for 30 secs ( kills cells ) ( softens cells )
- put leaf in text tube covered in ethanol ( which boils )
- remove the leaf
- rinse off for a while
- place on white tile
- add iodine
What are xylem tubes?/ what do they do?
They are part of the plant cell.
They transport water to the plant
What do guard cells do?
They change to open and close the stomata
What do phloem tubes do?
They transport food to the plant
What does the thin shape of the plant do?
It reduces the distance for CO2 to diffuse into the leaf
What is chlorophyll?
What does it do?
A green fluid in the plant cell that absorbs the sunlight to help photosynthesis take place.
What do stomata do?
They open and close to allow the plant to take in O2 and release CO2 and vise versa
What does soda lime do?
It absorbs CO2
What is a variegated plant
A part white part green leaf, meaning that the white part has no chlorophyll.
in mineral salts, without Nitrogen:
The leaves cannot develop.
They turn yellow.
The plant shows poor growth.
Chlorophyll and proteins cannot properly be formed.
In mineral salts, without phosphorus:
The roots cannot develop.
Plant shows poor growth.
Cannot respire properly.
In mineral salts, without potassium:
The fruits and flowers cannot develop.
The leaves become yellow and grow abnormally.
Chlorophyll and proteins cannot properly be formed.
What does biodegradable mean?
That it can be broken down into simple substances that can be “recycled”
How do you de-starch a plant?
Put it in a dark place for 2-3 days.
