Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Flashcards
(25 cards)
In what cell organelle does photosynthesis occur?
The chloroplast
In what cell organelle does cellular respiration occur?
The mitochondria
What organelle is only found in plants?
Chloroplasts
What are the three things needed for photosynthesis (the reactants)?
Sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water
Reactant
Needed material for a chemical reaction
Product
A molecule which is formed as a result of a chemical reaction
Which molecule provides the carbons that are used to make glucose?
Carbon dioxide
Which molecule provides the hydrogens that are used to make glucose?
Water molecules
What is the original source of energy for photosynthesis?
Light energy / Sunlight
What are the two products of photosynthesis?
Glucose and oxygen
What are the two things needed for cellular respiration (the reactants)
Glucose and oxygen
What are the three products of cellular respiration
ATP, Carbon Dioxide, and water
What is the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration?
Photosynthesis creates the glucose and oxygen needed for cellular respiration. They are also opposites.
What is the equation for cellular respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 –> 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water + ATP
What are the three steps of cellular respiration?
Glycolysis, Krebs Cycle, Electron Transport
Aerobic respiration
Oxygen is present, creates 36 ATP, goes through all three steps of cellular respiration
Anaerobic Respiration
Oxygen isn’t present, goes through glycolysis and fermentation, only creates 2 total ATP
Glycolysis
Takes place in the cytoplasm, doesn’t require oxygen, creates 2 ATP
Krebs Cycle
Makes 2 ATP, also called the Citric Acid Cycle or TCA cycle
Electron Transport Chain
Makes 32-34 ATP
Cellular Respiration
The process that releases energy from food in the presence of oxygen
What is the process that creates lactate molecules and
ATP in muscles?
anaerobic glycolysis
What colors of light does chlorophyll reflect the most?
Shades of green
The process of converting sugar energy into ATP using oxygen known as
Cellular respiration
