photosynthesis part 1 and 2 Flashcards
(15 cards)
what is photosynthesis?
the process by which producers, which are green plants, use light energy to make glucose
what is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide+water—>oxygen +glucose
what is required in order for this process to occur?
light and chlorophyll
what are the products of photosynthesis?
oxygen and glucose
where does photosynthesis occur?
in the chloroplsts of green lesf plants
what part of a plant cell captures light energy?
the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts
what are the two stages of photosynthesis?
stage 1:light reactions
stage 2:carbon fixation
describe stage 1 of photoysynthesis?
stage one involves the splitting up of water and the release of oxygen.
the light energy is trapped by the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts.here it is converted into chemical energy which is used to generate atp.this atp is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.the splitting of water generates more atp molecules
what diffuses from the cell and why?
oxygen as it is not needed
what 2 things move on from stage 1 to stage 2?
hydrogen and atp
describe stage 2 of photosynthesis?
stage two involved the combining of carbon dioxide and hydrogen to make sugar in the form of glucose
carbon fixation is a series of enzyme-controlled reactions which use hydrogen and atp (produced by the light reactions)with carbon dioxide to produce glucose in the form of sugar
what are the 3 fates of glucose?
storage,respiration and structutral
explain storage?
glucose can be converted to an insoluble carbohydrate called starch for storage
explain structural
glucose can be converted to cellulose and used to build the cell wall
explain respiration?
glucose can be used as a substrate for respiration
