Photosynthesis, Respiration And Energy Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is photosynthesis an example of?
A metabolic pathway
What is a metabolic pathway?
A process that occurs in a series of small reactions controlled by enzymes
What is respiration?
When energy is released from glucose
What does anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast make?
Ethanol and carbon dioxide
What does anaerobic respiration make in humans?
Lactate and energy
What are aerobic and anerobic respiration examples of?
Metabolic pathways
What is the immediate source of energy in a cell?
ATP
Where is the energy in ATP stored?
As chemical energy in the phosphate bond
What is phosphorylation?
Where a phosphate is added to a molecule
What are some properties of ATP that makes it a good energy source?
-ATP stores/releases only a small, manageable amount of energy at a time so no energy is wasted as heat
-It’s a small, soluble molecule so its can be easily transported around the cell
-Easily broken down, so energy can be easily released instantaneously
-Can be quickly remade
-Make other molecules more reaction via tranfering one of its phosphate groups to them
-ATP can’t diffuse our if the cell so cell always has immediate supply of energy
What is the compensation point for light intensity?
A particular level of light intensity at which the rate of photosynthesis exactly matches the rate of respiration
Example of how to work out compensation poor. For a plant:
-Find the rate are which oxygen is produced and used by a plant at different light intensities
-It’s the point where light intensity at which oxygen is being used as quickly as it’s made
