Photosythesis Flashcards
(23 cards)
Photosythesis formula
6CO2 + 6H2O + sun light ➡️ C6H12O6 + 6O2
Photosynthesis
Process of using the sun’s light, water and CO2 to make sugar (glucose) and water
Where does photosythesis happen?
Chloroplast
What are the two stages?
Light reaction
Calvin cycle
What happens during light reaction?
Turns the suns light into usable, chemical energy = ATP
What happens during the Calvin cycle?
Uses the ATP made during the light reaction to recombine H2O and CO2 into glucose
Happens in the stroma
Photons
Little pockets of light
Light can travel as what and what?
Photon and wavelength
What colors make up white light?
Roygbiv
What is the longest and shortest wavelength
Red is the longest and violet is the shortest
White reflects all colors
Black absorbs
Pigments
Pigments absorb light energy and turn in into usable energy (ATP)
Chlorophyll (green pigment) is the most important type in most plants (2 types = a and b)
Chlorophyll is stored in the chloroplast and allows the light reaction to occur
There are other pigments in most plants called carotenoids and xanthophyll; these are yellow, red and orange in color
Photo system one?
Also called P700 (absorb red light with 700nm wavelength)
First one discover but is the second involved in the light reaction
Photosystem two?
P680 (absorbs orange-red light with 680nm wavelength)
Steps of light reaction
A chlorophyll molecule at Photosystem II absorbs a photon and an electron from the molecule becomes excited
Next
The electron bounces to the next energy level; this is unstable so it quickly loses energy and falls back
Then
The electron is passed to an electron acceptor which is reduced and the chlorophyll is oxidized
Next
As the electrons move down the electron transport chain, H+ ions are pumped in the thylakoid lumen
What does this create
This creates a concentration gradient
Next
H+ ions diffuse back into the stroma through the ATP Synthase creating ATP
Then
Electrons are re-excited at Photosystem I before they are passed to another electron acceptor
Next
Final electron acceptor is NADP+ which is reduced to NADPH
Lastly
PSII regains electrons by splitting water; this also makes O2
